Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Dr Steve Surujbally recently, rather nonchalantly, declared that as far as he was concerned the incorrect declaration that was made by Chief Elections Officer Gocool Boodoo was nothing but a mere human error.
After taking more than three whole days to declare a ‘winner’ in the 2011 Guyanese Presidential elections, Surujbally was largely seen as grotesquely incompetent, unpatriotically biased and completely undeserving of the people’s and taxpayers’ trust. His profoundly arrogantand disdainful statements today, reflecting not a bit of contrition, are evidence enough that the citizens of Guyana are correct in their assessment of his supercilious and callous disregard for the level of professionalism and efficiency his great responsibility requires.
OVNN wishes to point out that Surujbally’s uncaring and blithe response to the enormity of this mistake, an error that would have led to a erroneous majority for the PPPC in our 10th Parliament- for which GECOM’s wrongful disenfranchisement of the AFC’s results in the previous general election must clearly have been a practice run – is consequently deserving of a strong vote of ‘no confidence’ in his stewardship of GECOM.
Concerned citizens of Guyana are wondering what other errors have been casually dismissed and still remain unrevealed to the Guyanese people. Is the PPPC’s feeble inability and unwillingness to fight crime, stamp out massive government corruption, manage flood control, provide clean water to the home, build reliable roads, provide quality education and health just a series of ‘errors’?
Guyanese can scarcely afford another five years of ‘management by error.’ While the PPPC continues to endow political hacks, cronies and friends with the power to run very important organizations and ministries in exchange for their political loyalty and shared corruption, Guyanese taxpayers must suffer the consequences of ineptitude and rampant corruption.
The people of Guyana deserve better. OVNN calls on all citizens to demand that the PPPC hire competent individuals and technocrats based on merit to carry out the will of the people. OVNN calls on all citizens to demand that the PPPC end twenty years of corruption, cronyism, incompetence and systematic discrimination against poor Guyanese.
