JFK airport terror plot
An anonymous jury is being sought by the US Government in the case involving former Guyanese parliamentarian Abdul Kadir and three others “because of the defendants’ terrorist activities” and their “contact with violent organisations”. The US Government said at least one of the four defendants, Russell Defreitas, had threatened to harm witness against him and this, coupled with substantial media attention has caused State Attorney Benton Campbell to apply to presiding Judge Dora Irizarry for an anonymous jury to ensure a fair trial. The prosecution hopes to have the jurors semi-sequestered — meaning they would take lunch together and would be kept together during recesses. Their names and addresses would not be revealed once the government gets its way.

President Bharrat Jagdeo on Tuesday said that his government has not ruled out getting back into the airline business. The announcement comes as the government continues to lash out at what Jagdeo called “unconscionable” fare increases by Caribbean Airlines. Caribbean Airlines is the main regional and international carrier out of Guyana, but it is the fare to destinations in the Caribbean, mainly Trinidad and Barbados, that the government is mostly outraged about. Jagdeo said that what Guyanese are being asked to pay to go to Trinidad and Barbados is sometimes more than what it costs from these destinations to go to the United States. Caribbean Airlines, Jagdeo noted, has argued that their fares are lower to the US because of the competition in these islands for flights to the United States. If that is the case, Jagdeo said, the Guyana Government could operate a service to Trinidad and Barbados.

A source wihin the Office of the President has revealed that the leader of the Opposition, Mr. Robert Corbin met with President Jagdeo, Tuesday last. If this is true then it's important that both men explain to the public the nature of the meeting. Failing to do so would justify citizens perception that Mr. Corbin is making secret deals with the PPP.

A suspect in last Wednesday’s robbery-murder at the Cool Square Bar, which left an overseas-based Guyanese dead, has been arrested and is to be charged today, according to police. Police officials have confirmed that a man was taken into custody on Monday and in a statement last evening informed that he was identified after intensive investigations as one of the perpetrators and is to be charged today. The arrest may have resulted from images that were left on security cameras set up inside the business. The cameras captured the entire robbery, which lasted about five minutes. The face of one of the two gunmen was visible in the footage. Canada-based Guyanese Rawle Harding was shot in the chest after he resisted one of the gunmen.

By Freddie Kissoon How can you compare two parents, one of which was never known in this world, had no proper education, remained obscured and hardly did anything significant or nationally known in their own country, and the other parent who was one of the country’s most powerful persons and at one time was the nation’s most powerful citizen. There can be no such comparison. Dr. Cheddi Jagan was Premier of Guyana from 1957 to 1964, then President from 1992 to 1997. Mr. Ralph Ramkarran joined the PPP in the late sixties and has served for more than twenty-five years in the inner council of the PPP. Dr. and Mrs. Jagan and Mr. Ramkarran then have histories behind them with many stories to be told, some undoubtedly positive, and some most definitely negative. Children of course love their parents and want to protect them. These children must rise above the occasion and recognize that the lives of their influential parents have not been filled with sweet-smelling roses all the time.
