GEORGETOWN – The U.S. Embassy hosted a viewing party for the live television broadcast of the 2012 State of the Union Address on January 24.  Fifteen University of Guyana International Relations students were invited to watch President Barack Obama’s annual public address to Congress and the nation.  The live broadcast was followed by a lively discussion on the issues and proposals raised in the address..

The State of the Union address is a constitutional obligation and a long-standing tradition for American presidents.  The U.S. Constitution requires that the president report to Congress “from time to time” on the “State of the Union.”  The speech reports on the condition of the United States, recommends a legislative agenda for the coming year, and gives the president an opportunity to convey his vision for the nation.

In this year’s State of the Union address, President Obama focused on manufacturing, energy, education, and American values of fair play and shared responsibility.  He proposed tax reforms, clean energy incentives, and job-training initiatives to battle income inequality in the United States.  The President highlighted his efforts to renew American leadership in the world and his desire to deepen ties with countries of the Americas.
After the broadcast, UG students shared their thoughts on President Obama’s speech, finding it to be very comprehensive and focused on its main theme of economic growth.  The students spoke about the impact of the American economy on Guyana and expressed interest in following the 2012 U.S. presidential elections.

Mission Statement

The Mark Benschop Foundation was officially launched in March 2008 by its founder and chairman Mark Benschop and other concerned Guyanese and well wishers in the United States of America. What started as a small operation geared toward helping those in need has grown so large that they were forced to move their offices to a whole building in East Street where the vast amount of people responding to their generosity  could be accommodated.
