Officials at the Georgetown Prisons probably thought that they could conceal the death of a prisoner at the institution yesterday. So they dressed the body in the normal bright orange garb which is worn by inmates being taken to hospital with the hope of concealing the death. But when they decided to handcuff the dead man, it sparked outrage among other inmates who were angry at the attempt to cover-up the man’s death. Kaieteur News understands that the man who was suffering from a terminal illness was discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation on Tuesday. He was taken back to the prison infirmary where he succumbed around 14:00 hours yesterday. But officials at the penal institution were not prepared to accept any blame for his death. According to sources within the prison, officials there not only dressed the man in the hospital garbs but went as far as to handcuff him as if he was a living prisoner being taken to the hospital.

This newspaper got word of the act and proceeded to the Georgetown Public Hospital to get a glimpse of the bizarre sight of the handcuffed body.
However, prison officials were alerted that the newspaper was waiting at the hospital, so before they arrived they promptly took the handcuffs off.
But they did not have time to remove the hospital garb.
Several persons, upon hearing what was transpiring converged at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit and the officers who had brought in the man’s body could do nothing but smile to conceal their embarrassment.

Mission Statement

The Mark Benschop Foundation was officially launched in March 2008 by its founder and chairman Mark Benschop and other concerned Guyanese and well wishers in the United States of America. What started as a small operation geared toward helping those in need has grown so large that they were forced to move their offices to a whole building in East Street where the vast amount of people responding to their generosity  could be accommodated.
