| Gang members tortured by police then ‘confess’ to Aranka mining camps robberies |

(Editor's Note: Rohee and Greene allegedly ordered the torturing of suspects) Three members of a gang intercepted in the interior over the weekend have confessed to committing three armed robberies on mining camps at Aranka, Cuyuni River and have implicated two others. The robberies were committed sometime late last week and the quintet was arrested by police on Saturday who acted on a tip-off. The group was brought to the city sometime yesterday and a team is in the area conducting further investigations. Police Commissioner Henry Greene told Stabroek News yesterday at the Police Marine Section, Ruimveldt following the handing over of a patrol boat, that the group should be making a court appearance today. “One is from Victoria, three from Ann’s Grove and one from Meadow Brook. Three admitted and implicated the other two that were also involved”, he said. The Commissioner added that the gang went to the area with the sole intention of robbing Brazilian camps. He said that following their arrest a laptop which had been stolen, cell phone and “some other things”, were recovered but there were no guns or ammunition. Asked about this, Greene said that the weapons, “obviously might have been rented or borrowed”. While responding to questions on the recent upsurge of gun crimes in the interior regions, he said that the biggest challenge the police face is the price of gold. “It is very high and I think that is what is captivating people to move to the interior. Once they go and work in the interior they make a lot of money when compared with what they will make out here on the coast. And therefore some criminal elements end up in there. Many of the time they seek opportunity, to do these things. They are there, then they observe what their boss is doing then they look for an opportunity” he added. Up to press time last evening police were still to send out a press release on the armed robberies. |
