Magistarate Haymant Ramdhani presiding at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court on Friday issued an arrest warrant for former Judge, Jainarine Singh Jr. after he failed to attend court on several traffic charges. he former judge was charged last week with several traffic violations, stemming from an accident last Tuesday night at Clonbrook , East Coast Demerara. ollowing the accident, Singh was arrested after police suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol. owever, according to a senior official at the C Division Headquarters, he refused to submit to the breathaliser test and was later sent on self bail. Singh failed to turn up for his day in court, hence the arrest warrant. It is not clear if the police effected the warrant, but a source assured that he will be taken before the magistrate tomorrow. Meanwhile, in another case of a senior official seemingly being above the law, Traffic Magistrate Chandra Sohan had also reportedly refused to submit to the breathaliser test last Thursday night. The Magistrate was initially involved in an accident at Coldingen to which the police responded. The ranks immediately suspected that Sohan was under the influence and invited him to the Vigilance Police Station with a view to have him submit to the breathaliser. The Magistrate refused and reportedly used threatening and abusive language to the ranks. He eventually drove away from the scene. A senior police official told this newspaper that a person can refuse to take thee breathaliser test but a prima facie case will be made out and the person will have to appear in court to answer a charge of failure to submit to the breathaliser test. Kaieteur News understands that since the Magistrate is a senior public official, the police will be seeking the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine the way forward. Several police officers are upset over the recent events pointing to a case of persons thinking that they are above the law and disrespect for the police. “If we take a certain course of action we run the risk of being sanctioned by our superiors,” one junior rank said. But a top official of the force said that the time has come for the police to maintain their professionalism and ensure that the laws of Guyana are adhered to by every citizen. |
