A PPP leader discovers paradise

It is obvious that Mr. Hyday Ally, the Secretary of the PPP’s Executive Committee does not read what his colleague, Mr. Ralph Ramkarran writes. Twice Mr. Ramkarran observed that if he was to be President he would prioritize the area of ethnic reconciliation. Mr. Hydar Ally knows fully well that what he wrote is nonsense but the PPP’s election campaign has begun. Writing in a newspaper that his President has urged the private sector to cease advertising in, Mr. Ally exclaimed in an exasperatingly foolish way in a letter in the Sunday edition of this newspaper, “I get angry and upset when people seek to create the impression that we are divided as a nation and that the races of this country do not co-exist peacefully and in a state of harmony.

I challenge any of these pseudo intellectuals to provide one iota of evidence to establish that there is any form of racial or ethnic discrimination practiced by this current PPP/C administration since it assumed the mantle of leadership of this country.”
Let us leave aside Mr. Ally’s desire to ridicule himself in front of the people who read this newspaper in and out of Guyana, the sickness with the public relations spokespersons of the PPP is their uncontrollable compulsion to make themselves look comical in the eyes of the population. From Kwame Mc Coy to Hydar Ally to Prem Misir to Randy Persaud, there is no attempt to appear intellectual and mask their propaganda with subtle reasoning. How foolish can a Guyanese citizen be to say; “Show me one iota of evidence of racial discrimination by the PPP Government.”
Surely, you can express that very sentiment and not appear so laughable. There are virtually millions of ways to rephrase that statement without having to make people laugh at you.
Every citizen in this country, whether politics interest them or not, whether they prefer PNC or PPP or are neutral, knows that Guyana’s longstanding historical problem is the race divide and this has been expressed in voting patterns since 1957
An interesting thing is going on. The PPP is reacting tempestuously to race charges against it. Mr. Jagdeo has created a precedent in world politics.
No serving leader in any country in the world (I checked it out, though my research may not be complete) has ever sued a political party, a commentator or an academic for saying that the government of which he/she is the leader practices racism.
That is a common charge in multi-racial territories. Even in South Africa, some white politicians are speaking about ANC’s racism against whites. Then Mr. Clement Rohee got into a cuss down mode in his reaction to the race observation by the outgoing British High Commission.
Why this rage by state oligarchs against those who are analyzing racial discrimination? It has to do with the impending election. The PPP knows that it has completely lost its historical glow and permanently so and the causal factor is ethnic hegemony.
Even though corruption has permanently damaged the soul of PPP leaders, the corruption disease is not confined to the Government of Guyana alone and Freedom House thinks that the corruption charge has become common place around the world so it can hide under that banality. The practice of racism is of a much more dangerous cloth in the modern world.
The governments of the world and the major international organizations in world politics find racism at the state level to be a crime worthy of strong condemnation and even sanctions. Things have become even more serious with the rise of a Black American President. Not to mention in the heart of Europe, the leading superstars in sports are Africans.
No one in the Caribbean and at the level of the friendly countries that help Guyana can be fooled that we do not have a cancer eating at the soul of a multi-ethnic nation.
The world knows that the practice of racism either by an African government or an Indian administration has been Guyana’s tsunami since self-government was granted by the colonial power. In today’s Guyana, it is virtually impossible to convince the other half of our population that they are not being targeted for political and economic diminution.
Hydar Ally, of course, has discovered paradise in Guyana. A few weeks ago he extolled in this very newspaper the virtues of democracy that the PPP Government has brought to Guyana. Now he sees a land of perfect racial harmony. Someone needs to awaken this PPP leader from his permanent slumber.
