Bisham Emandin, the man who threw the book “the Deceit of Lucifer” at Magistrate Geeta Chandan Persid Edmond on July 2nd 2009 while she was presiding at the New Amsterdam Remand Centre was on Friday fined $25,000 or an alternative of three months in prison. The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when Emandin appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. Emandin of Better Hope Street, Cumberland Village, East Canje Berbice is before the court on a number of charges including rape, robbery under arms and unlawful possession of ammunition.

On the day in question, the man was before the Magistrate on a charge of possession of firearm without licence. He was denied bail and was further remanded to prison. As he was being escorted back to the penitentiary, the convict, who was handcuffed to another prisoner, picked up the book which he had earlier deposited on the stairway and tossed it at the Magistrate. The book narrowly missed Magistrate Persid-Edmond, hitting the desk before landing on the ground. The convict had secreted the book in his waist, when he left the prison.
At the time of the incident the court orderly was aiding the lone police officer in escorting prisoners from the Remand centre back to the prison.
Magistrate Edmond then had admonished the authorities to put things in order so that an incident like that would not happen again.
In court, the convict asked the Magistrate for a light sentence. “Anything light gon do,” he pleaded. He was taken to prison since he indicated that he does not have money to pay.

The Mark Benschop Foundation was officially launched in March 2008 by its founder and chairman Mark Benschop and other concerned Guyanese and well wishers in the United States of America. What started as a small operation geared toward helping those in need has grown so large that they were forced to move their offices to a whole building in East Street where the vast amount of people responding to their generosity  could be accommodated.
