The flu season is here and reports emanating from various pharmacies around the city have shown that there is a tremendous increase in the sale of flu medications at most pharmacies, while pharmacies in Berbice and Essequibo disclosed that sales are not extraordinary. Various organisations indicate a shortage in their workforce. They say that this appears to be the strongest flu to have engulfed sections of the population so rapidly. According to most pharmacists’ recommendations, persons should use one, Thera- Flu, ibuprofen 800, two sinus tablets every eight hours, along with doses of Vitamin C enriched fruits or supplements. However, customers have increased their purchase of cough syrups, pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication and those for nausea and vomiting. The complaints presented by customers at various pharmacies have been the typical flu symptoms which include, coughing, headaches, sore throats, painful joints, constant thirst, sneezing and runny noses; and in some cases vomiting and diarrhea. In serious cases the pharmacies recommend visits to the doctor. Pharmacists are also advising that those who have contracted the flu use at least one 1000g Vitamin C tablet daily. This may shorten the course of the flu which lasts from three to four days. If it lasts longer, see a doctor. According to reports there were more uncertainties than usual going into this flu season (2009-2010), because of the emergence of the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus (previously called “novel H1N1” or “swine flu”). This virus caused the first influenza pandemic (global outbreak of disease) in more than 40 years. According to Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, the flu season has begun and persons should take the necessary precautions; when asked if there is a different strength of flu symptom being circulated the Minister noted that there is no evidence to suggest that at this time. However, no advisory was placed in the public domain to warn persons of the particular strain of the current flu. |
