Bandits carted off an estimated $300,000 from the Agricola Post Office yesterday morning during a brazen robbery. he bandits who were said to be in their early twenties kicked a door open to gain access to the cash. A security officer at the post office told this newspaper that she had observed the two bandits on their cell phones prior to the robbery, which occurred at about 11:00hrs. “I see these two boys who had on pencil bottom jeans standing across the road on dem cell phone.” The woman said that she became suspicious and went inside the office and made a call to the head office. Seconds later, the same two individuals stormed into the post office, brandishing handguns and demanding that the workers and two civilians who were in the post office lie on the ground. Also present in the post office were two internal auditors who had gone to the facility to check on the accounts.

The woman said that everyone complied with the bandits. She explained that while one of the bandits watched the persons, the other one demanded that an inner door be opened.
“He ask of the auditors to open de f….ing door before he shoot somebody”.
The guard told this newspaper that an employee went to open the door, but apparently took too long, so the bandit kicked the door open, and gun butted the employee.
After snatching the money the bandits stormed out of the post office and headed towards Georgetown.
A police press release said that about 11:00hrs three men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, held up postal clerk and an audit clerk.
The release said that the men took away an estimated $300,000 and made good their escape.
The audit clerk, according to the police, was assaulted about his body during the incident and was treated at the Georgetown Hospital and later sent away.
The Guyana Post Office Corporation in a press statement said that the entity remained dedicated to its staff and customers. The release further said that the Corporation was assuring the public that it will continue to earnestly maintain the vital services it provides in a secure environment for staff and customers.
The police are continuing with their investigations.
A police source told this newspaper that the persons who attacked the post office were suspected to be part of a gang that is wreaking havoc on the East Bank.
The police said that the gang had committed numerous robberies and at least two murders.
