In preparation for the upcoming Local Government Elections, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has been working with political parties and other interested persons/groups to clarify matters surrounding the elections. GECOM recently met with the political parties at a workshop held at Hotel Tower Ltd. on Friday last. According to a press release issued by GECOM, the workshop was titled “Preparations for Nomination Day” and it followed a similar one that had been held on February 17th 2010.
Those present included all the major political parties as well as a few others, less well known, along with a number of independent candidates and voluntary groups.

Matters tabled for discussion were the explanation of the qualifications/disqualifications of a Councillor and candidacy requirements.
They also discussed the processes involving the submitting, supporting and examining of the Lists of Candidates as well as insight into the procedure for making corrections on lists that may be defective.
Also on the agenda were the preparations for the upcoming elections and the publication of approved lists.
The effort is a result of GECOM’s intention for candidates contesting the elections to be duly informed of all the pertinent procedures and requirements.
GECOM stands “ready and willing” to assist any potential contestant who needs assistance with information or any other aspect of the Local Government Elections system and process.

Mission Statement

The Mark Benschop Foundation was officially launched in March 2008 by its founder and chairman Mark Benschop and other concerned Guyanese and well wishers in the United States of America. What started as a small operation geared toward helping those in need has grown so large that they were forced to move their offices to a whole building in East Street where the vast amount of people responding to their generosity  could be accommodated.
