Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said the police investigations into the murder of former Agriculture Minister Satydeow Sawh, his two siblings and his security guard have unearthed no evidence of the involvement of self-confessed drug trafficker Shaheed ‘Roger ‘Khan. The crime chief was responding to queries from this newspaper following revelations by the late Minister’s brother-in-law Bob Persaud which suggest that Roger Khan and his gang of ‘Phantoms’ may have knowledge of the brutal April 22, 2006 murders. Persaud who lost his wife, Phulmattie Persaud called Julie, the late Minister’s sister, told a local newspaper that he was seeking the assistance of the government to help him visit Khan, who is serving 15 years in a US jail for drug trafficking. He said that he hopes to extract as much information from the prosecutor in Khan’s case about a ‘hit list’.Persaud said that he is also seeking the assistance of the Canadian government to put the matter to rest. But according to Crime Chief Persaud, who was not the Chief Detective at the time of the murders, local sleuths had carried out extensive investigations into the killings and based on these investigations, persons were charged on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Indeed several persons were charged for the murders including Rondell ‘Fineman’ Rawlins, who never appeared to answer the charges, since he was killed by the security forces after eluding capture for a considerable length of time. One of his lieutenants, Jermaine ‘Skinny’ Charles, was also charged with the murders but he escaped while attending a court hearing. David Leander called ‘Biscuit’, had almost completed the Preliminary Inquiry stage of his trial when he died mysteriously at the Georgetown Hospital. At his arraignment at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, several persons had testified, including the minister’s wife Sattie Sawh and his brother, who both survived the attack. However, there was the feeling that the case against Leander was heading towards an acquittal based on the evidence that surfaced. Several other persons from a Buxton-based gang for whom wanted bulletins and arrest warrants were issued were either shot and killed by the police or have disappeared without a trace. The minister’s brother in law is quoted as saying that “the way the (Guyana) government handled their investigation was a tragedy and has all the hallmarks of a cover-up”. He also questioned why the Criminal Investigations Department of the Guyana Police Force did not dig deeper to see who was behind the killings. Crime Chief Persaud told this newspaper that as far as he is aware the local police did all that they had to do with respect to the investigations into the killings. According to the police, spent shells recovered at the scene of the crime matched several other scenes visited by the Buxton gang. “If he is saying that there was a suppression of evidence then I will have an interest in that,” the Crime Chief stated. |
