Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, during the consideration of the estimates of expenditure for 2010 at the National Assembly, announced that government is looking to place 24-hour security at schools. Currently, only some schools are benefiting from the 24-hour guard service while others have evening guards. People’s National Congress Reform Member, Amna Ally, had suggested that the 24-hour service be provided for all schools. Recent reports suggest that violence in schools is on the rise with a number of stabbings and gang beaters with teachers even being abused physically. Coupled with this are break-ins and daring daylight robberies within the schools. The opposition Members of Parliament (MPs), according to a GINA report of the estimates for 2010, had also earlier sought clarifications and wanted to know why there was a delay in the commencement of construction of the two technical institutes in Regions three and five. The Ministry was able to secure the land at Park, Mahaicony and construction will commence and conclude this year, he said. The contracts for the construction of both institutions were signed this week. Ally had also inquired whether the Ministry has conducted a survey in all the schools to ascertain the need for furniture. According to the Minister Baksh, “That the honourable member will know that we are at present conducting a survey of all the schools in Georgetown to assess needs for the next school year. We have procured a lot of furniture for the first term of school to satisfy the needs of the system… but we are already doing a survey in the schools of Georgetown and the Regions have also been requested, a needs assessment form has been sent out to all the schools.” |
