Hindus throughout Guyana will today observe Maha Shiva Raatri, one of the most sacred days in the Hindu calendar. Maha Shiva Raatri is the great day consecrated for the worship of the god Shiva and occurs on Chaturdasi the 14th day of the dark half of the Hindu month of Phalgun which is tomorrow. Shiva Raatri is not Shiva’s birthday but a day declared by him to emphasize and strengthen the Hindu concept of the oneness of god. In the Hindu pantheon, Shiva has been identified as the god of dissolution but in his dissolution there is automatic recreation. Maha Shiva Raatri, therefore is a profound spiritual event. Hindus fast, pray, chant and perform Puja. The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha is encouraging Hindus to celebrate the occasion with Divine fervour, “which will not simply influence your contemplation but absorb you.” The Sabha will be holding Puja and Satsangh for the occasion at Dharmic Rama Krishna Mandir, Barr Street, Kitty and at the Shri Krishna Mandir, Campbellville. The largest celebration of Shiv Raatri in Guyana will be held at the Cove and John Ashram, East Coast Demerara. It takes place over a 24-hour period. |
