Yesterday, the Guyana Bauxite & General Workers Union picketed the Russian Embassy, Bauxite Company Guyana Inc (BCGI), and once again picketed the Office of the Minister of Labour. The Unions wants Minister Manzoor Nadir, Chief Conciliator, to know that he cannot abrogate his responsibility and must act forthwith to enforce the laws to bring a resolution to the dispute which started Nov. 22, 2009 and has since escalated to the wrongful dismissal of 57 workers, workforce intimidation and other illegal acts by BCGI. Those joining the picket line today were union officials, bauxite workers who were wrongfully dismissed, members of the opposition Working People's Alliance, the federated Guyana Trades Union Congress, Guyana Teachers Union, social activist/journalist Mark Benschop and public spirited citizens.During the picketing at the Russian Embassy the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers’ Unions, Geneva Switzerland, delivered a message to workers via telephone extending it continued solidarity with their struggle. ICEM, General Secretary General Secretary, Manfred Warda, dispatched a letter (Jan. 29, 2010) to RUSAL, CEO, Mr. Deripaska and Chairman Mr. Velselberg informing that “The ongoing dispute between BCGI and the Guyana Bauxite & General Workers’ Union is serving to further sully your company’s reputation, and unless your intervention happens in Guyana, the ICEM will work in Geneva, and internationally, to discredit your company’s social policies and human relations conduct.” |
