| Linden Police lock-up members of community policing group |

Members of the Central Amelia’s Ward Policing Group have condemned the attitude of the police of E Division based at Mackenzie, Linden, who threw three of their members into the lockups, after a fracas with suspected criminal elements ended with one homeowner’s glass door being smashed by one of the gang members. According to Mokesh Ramanan, a member of the policing group, which was only registered January 31, last, himself and two other members were patrolling the central Amelia’s Ward area, shortly after 1:00 a.m on Sunday when they observed two suspicious looking men, and decided to follow them. When the men realized that they were being followed, they began to run. They scaled a fence and disappeared, according to reports. They were pursued by the policing group, but only one of them was caught. The man was placed in the car. As the group was proceeding on the way to the station, the members decided to get ‘back-up’ after the guy began behaving badly. ‘’We stopped in front of my brother’s house and call he out to assist in subduing the man, in order to carry him to the station; but before me brother reach the car, a group of about seven men pounce on he and start firing lashes wild with pieces of wood,’’ Mokesh related.The policing group said that its members were forced to fight back, and that seemed to anger the men, one of whom subsequently pelted a piece of wood at Haimchand Ramanan’s house, smashing his glass door in the process. Mokesh Ramanan’s car was also damaged by the men What was most surprising, according to members of the policing group and other concerned residents of central Amelia’s Ward, is the alacrity with which the gang of men appeared, almost as if they had been lurking around somewhere close by with criminal intent. The members of the policing group, including Mokesh Rananan, were later thrown into the lockups while the suspected bandit was taken to the Mackenzie Hospital, where he was treated and sent away Meanwhile 18-year-old Quacy Griffith of 1220 Central Amelia’s Ward, identified as the youth that was beaten by the policing group, has denied any wrongdoing. According to Griffith he was walking home, around 1a.m when he noticed a car cruising behind him slowly. Griffith said that despite his best efforts to elude the car, the vehicle still continued to trail him. The young man said that he then started to run, but the car soon caught up with him, and the men came out and administered a sound trashing on him.He was only saved by a passing taxi, which he claims took him to the Linden Hospital where he was treated and sent away. Amelia’s ward has been plagued by a recent upsurge in crime recently. Only a few weeks ago, bandits went on a crime spree, robbing several persons and even shooting a pastor in the community. Residents condemned these criminal acts most vociferously and have been calling on the police to be more prompt in investigating criminal acts in the community. Considered one of the largest housing schemes in the Caribbean, Amelia’s Ward will soon be home to its very own police station, and residents are hoping that with the new police station the police would start treating the issue of crime in the community with the urgency it deserves. |
