City Council to seek investigation into Small’s assault

“The only criminals that the police seem able to identify live either in Albouystown, Buxton or in the Ghetto where the black people live,” said City Mayor Hamilton Green yesterday. He made this comment during the municipal statutory meeting and expressed concern about the recent assault on Troy Small, called Cats, who was the first person to be identified as a suspect into the torching of the Ministry of Health’s main building at Brickdam. According to the Mayor, while Cats is not technically a member of the municipality, he is aware that the man has a physical and mental defect, hinting that the man could not have been involved in the criminal act.
The Mayor, as a result, solicited the support of councillors yesterday to make a request for the Commissioner of Police or the Minister of Home Affairs to investigate the matter fully, even as he noted that Small was brutalised by some set of persons.
“I don’t think that justice is being served. The German priest made a powerful statement after the Second World War, ‘Who will be next? But I don’t want to make any comments.’”
According to Green, although it has been reported that the government is expected to get external help to investigate the fire, yet suspects are being picked up very capriciously.
He noted though that he will speak more on the matter at another forum.
Small was allegedly abducted by ranks of the Guyana Defence Force and with half of his body hanging out of a car, he was dragged for several miles from Mandela Avenue to Le Repentir Cemetery where he was beaten with a hammer.
Since the incident was revealed by this newspaper, both the GDF and the Guyana Police Force have said little about the matter.
However, some senior officials of the police force have laid the blame squarely at the feet of the GDF, insisting that the army has no powers of arrest.
Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon has since noted that the issue was raised at a very important meeting and he was assured that a report would be provided as to the details of the allegations and findings.
