| Gonsalves should not comment term limits in Guyana – Trotman |

Alliance for Change leader Raphael Trotman has called on the Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines to refrain from commenting on the issue of presidential term limits in Guyana saying that the issue pertains to “our constitution”. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves spoke on the issue while in Guyana for the 30th Regular Meeting of the Caricom Heads of Government and had declared that he supported ending term limits in the region.
At a press briefing last week, Trotman told reporters that he had cause to send a cautionary message to the Prime Minister advising that he stay out of issue. “I have spoken with persons in St Vincent who are close to Dr Gonsalves telling him to stay out of this issue. He may deal with other issues pertaining to Caricom and immigration policies but when it comes to our constitution he should keep his hands off and away from it,” the AFC leader said.Trotman emphasized that that Gonsalves should stay out and “let us deal with our business”. He said too that the party would resist any effort to extend the term limit for President Bharrat Jagdeo. But the President has strongly rejected the notion that he might be interested in a third term, declaring earlier this year during a press conference in Trinidad and Tobago that there is no such interest on his part. “No! I am not interested in running for a third term, but I think that many of them are fearful that I would want to run a third time,” the President had said. Jagdeo added that he believed people should serve and then move on. |
