Farmer remanded over shallow grave murder of 10-year-old boy

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday remanded to prison a 23-year-old crop farmer, who is accused of murdering the 10-year-old boy whose remains were discovered in a shallow grave at Maikwak, Upper Potaro two weeks ago. When Shawn Xavier of Maikwak Village, Upper Potaro, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, he stood in handcuffs in the dock of the court and was told that he was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of murder. It is alleged that between February 27 and June 10 this year, Xavier murdered Markinson Felix.

The magistrate subsequently granted Prosecutor Dennise Griffith her request that Xavier be remanded to prison and that the matter be transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for September 8.

According to reports a hunter in the area stumbled on a grave two weeks ago and the remains were then unearthed.

The Mark Benschop Foundation was officially launched in March 2008 by its founder and chairman Mark Benschop and other concerned Guyanese and well wishers in the United States of America. What started as a small operation geared toward helping those in need has grown so large that they were forced to move their offices to a whole building in East Street where the vast amount of people responding to their generosity could be accommodated.
