OP denies Jagdeo visited Switzerland

Kwame McCoy…despite Guyana Consul in Canada announcement
Press and Publicity Officer to the President, Kwame McCoy, yesterday stated that President Bharrat Jagdeo was not in Switzerland. He then criticised Kaieteur News columnist Freddie Kissoon’s column ‘Why was President Jagdeo in Switzerland?’ in the Tuesday June 30, 2009 issue of the newspaper. However, while the President’s Publicity Officer said that the Head of State was not in Switzerland, Guyana’s Consul in Canada had released a statement prior to the President’s visit to Canada stating that he will be visiting Switzerland.
The statement said, “His Excellency Bharrat Jagdeo, President of the Republic of Guyana, leaves Guyana today for the 14th annual Guyana Festival in Toronto scheduled for this weekend.
President Jagdeo will leave Canada on June 21St for a conference in Geneva, Switzerland before returning home.”
Yesterday, Mc Coy criticized Kissoon’s column and concluded that readers of Kaieteur News would by now have become accustomed to Kissoon’s appalling attempts at trying to sound erudite and scholarly when all he produces is a mish-mash of so-called columns that never cease to amaze.
“His latest offering is another classic piece of diatribe which has little to do with the headline of the article but one that seems to fit in with the agenda of the Kaieteur News,” Mc Coy said.
Mc Coy said that one recalls that some time back the newspaper claimed in an article that President Bharrat Jagdeo had sold out the reserves of this country and when confronted with the false claim, it said it was just a joke.
“In any other part of the world such a serious accusation against the Head of State would have had serious repercussions but this repeated behaviour is demonstrative of the democracy, tolerance and freedom of the press Guyana lavishly enjoys.”
Last evening, Kissoon, reacting to Mc Coy’s statement said that in other countries the President would have been removed for less than what President Jagdeo does here in Guyana.
Mc Coy noted that President Jagdeo had intended to visit Switzerland at the invitation of Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to speak on Climate Change but cancelled his visit because of the CARICOM Heads of Government conference.
The President’s visit was intended to be an official engagement and not because of Switzerland’s secrecy banking, McCoy said.

Mission Statement

The Mark Benschop Foundation was officially launched in March 2008 by its founder and chairman Mark Benschop and other concerned Guyanese and well wishers in the United States of America. What started as a small operation geared toward helping those in need has grown so large that they were forced to move their offices to a whole building in East Street where the vast amount of people responding to their generosity  could be accommodated.
