Paying NIS has become so much riskier |

There are serious issues concerning hundreds of thousands of Guyanese contributors to the National Insurance Scheme (NIS). Until we get audited answers, we cannot stop with this issue. When our precious dollars are squandered in projects such as the Berbice Bridge with no measurable returns while others receive 11 per cent based on the excessive high tolls, we must continue to pressure the government to come clean to the population.

OVERVIEW: One individual told me that with all the financial crisis and lack of an economic plan by the PPP government, at the end of the day it is the “small people” that are forgotten. They also added that the financial crisis and loss of jobs does not affect anyone in government. They still drive their gas guzzling vehicles, do not pay GPL or fuel bills, or are the ones that lose their money in CLICO or in the banks that will also start to fail and they all still have their jobs. The economic crisis that the President said many times will never come to Guyana is here. What happened to the “firewall” he built around Guyana? He even said two weeks ago that CLICO is safe and because it is “Guyana CLICO”. What a bunch of crock. The President once again has lied to us. Just this Friday he made another wild statement as if he was the CEO of Republic Bank. He said “Republic Bank (Guyana) is a very solid institution which does not have much of its investment abroad” Which bank does not have investment abroad? What then do they do with the money in the bank?

The blueprint of our future |

OVERVIEW: I was invited by Mark Benschop to speak to about thirty students to whom his foundation was providing computer training. It is very commendable that we have organisations such as this foundation that provides such a service free of charge. The students were of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. During the questions and answer period, most of the issues raised were: where is the job market, why there are so limited jobs and why was tax money wasted on programmes that don’t benefit them. Some were single women who struggle to get a better education and find jobs. The budget in 2009 cut many programs that will help them provide for their families.

Peter R. Ramsaroop, MBA OVERVIEW: We all know by now, I am one of the biggest advocates for Tax Reduction. One senior diplomat told me this week that we must show how we intend to accomplish our goals of tax reduction, while stimulating our economy for growth. It sounds simple, but I agree.

Over the last year, we have come to understand the plight of the Air Traffic Controllers, from low pay, unsanitary toilets and poor working conditions. The Union has done a great job in bringing these to the attention of the employer who in this case is the Government.

OVERVIEW: While in DC this week I was able to get just a glimpse of President Obama. He was very busy working with leaders of Congress and the Senate to put together a new economic plan for the US. I then read the Guyana local newspapers of how we are firing people for voicing their rights for better working conditions and more importantly it is our President that then comes in the country and directs how fifteen employees will be dealt with.
