Sewage madness and the hopelessness of a government |
|
Wednesday, 20 May 2009 |
Do you know that Georgetown has 24 sewage stations (pumping stations) and at the moment only three are working? There are two in Charlestown and one at the junction of Camp and Regent Streets. Of those 22 non-functioning units, the one at High and Princes Streets has been out for 12 years.

Paper forms and forms of conspiracies inside the PNC |
|
Tuesday, 19 May 2009 |
PNC Parliamentarian, Aubrey Norton, said that he would not call Dr. Van West Charles a liar but that Dr Van West Charles “is a little bit distant from the truth.” One wonders if Mr. Norton himself may not be a little far away from the highway of truth. Whatever happened between Dr Van West Charles and Norton over the request for membership forms has generated more conflict inside the PNC at a time when Mr. Jagdeo seems more inclined to travel outside of Guyana, to deepen his authoritarian games and endure scandal after scandal as Guyana slides deeper into economic misery.

Betrayal and self-destruction in the African-Guyanese community |
|
Monday, 18 May 2009 |
As the months tick away to 2011, it appears that Bharrat Jagdeo will leave no admirable legacy. We are almost halfway into 2009. From now until mid 2010, what can Mr. Jagdeo do with a government whose Treasury is not impressively filled with money and in a country where things move agonizingly slow to leave his indelible mark on the front cover of Guyanese history? The answer is not encouraging for the supporters of Mr. Jagdeo.

A clock whose hands go anti-clockwise |
|
Sunday, 17 May 2009 |
My daughter went to St. Agnes Nursery School on Church Street inside the compound of St. Rose’s High School. At that time, I didn’t have a car. I used to fetch her on my shoulders and when we reached the junction of North Road and Camp Street, I walked off the pavement onto Camp Street just to avoid the fetid mess that was always on the pavement.

Something my brother did for Mrs. Jagan |
|
Saturday, 16 May 2009 |
There needs to be some comments on two poignant perspectives on Mrs. Janet Jagan in the Stabroek News of March 30. These two analytical adumbrations are very important in filling the gaps in Guyanese history. One is contained in the paper’s editorial, the other by Dr. Cary Fraser in the column, “In the Diaspora.”

Questions for Caribbean Police Commissioners |
|
Friday, 15 May 2009 |
The Caribbean Police Commissioners wrap up their one week conference today so I thought I may ask them to respond to some questions I have about democracy in their respective countries. My interest lies in particular with the Anglo-phone Caribbean. When you make a comparison with Guyana and the rest of the English-speaking West Indies, Guyana appears as a politically hopeless place.
