Breaking News: Health Ministry arson suspect captured at Linden
Friday, 26 November 2010

-two women also detained following arms cache find

Police at Linden have captured Colin Jones, the suspect who escaped from the Providence Police Station last year after being arrested in connection with the July 17, 2009 fire that destroyed the Health Ministry building.

Jones is believed to be the same gunman who hurled a grenade at police ranks and shot at them on Thursday, shortly after an assault rifle and several rounds of ammunition were discovered on a farm aback of Amelia’s Ward, Linden. Jones is said to be 21 and his last known address was given as Lot 3 West La Penitence, Georgetown.

He is reportedly being detained at the Mackenzie Police Station. Kaieteur News understands the police have also detained an elderly Linden woman and her daughter in connection with the find. Jones, along with Kurt Theriens, had escaped from the Providence Police Station shortly after being arrested in connection with the fire that razed the Health Ministry’s main buildings in Brickdam. On Thursday, police recovered the assault rifle,   500 rounds of ammunition, eight magazines, four handcuffs and three camouflage vests on a farm. According to a resident, a boy made the discovery while visiting his father’s farm. He immediately told his father who contacted the police.

Residents said that as police were heading for the area, they spotted a man, suspected to be Jones, walking up a hill. They immediately challenged the man, who threw a grenade at them before fleeing into the bushes.

"I have been begging our President for financial assistance so I can live, for the past ten years and have not received it. I have had to depend on my parents who are pensioners and my family to support me. It is shameful at this stage of my life to regress to having my parents support me..."

"This is the first country that I have heard of where the First Lady is proactive, doing good for the nation but gets penalised because her husband is President and finds her work to help the same people he swore to defend and represent as “showing up the ...inadequacies of his government” and therefore made me his enemy. He decided that to punish me he would withhold all resources, financial and otherwise and line my path with a multitude of cruel, selfish obstacles..."

The Benschop Foundation, which plans to open a multi-million dollar branch in Linden, on Wednesday, handed over a quantity of books to the Christianburg Wismar Secondary School.  Social activist, Mark Benschop conservatively valued the 500 books at GUY$500,000. They were handed over to the Head teacher, Cleveland Thomas.  “The whole thing is to have others chip in,” Benschop told demerarawaves.com.  The Foundation plans to supply and install a bank of Internet-ready computers at the school to assist in the teaching and learning of Information Technology.  Benschop was also in Linden overseeing completion works to an area where the Linden branch of his foundation would be located. The GUY$600,000 facility would offer classes in Information Technology, CXC subjects and remedial education. At least 400 students would be attending classes on a rotational basis each week, he said.  The facility is expected to open its doors in the ‘Consumers Compound,’ Republic Avenue next week.  The Benschop Foundation's major location is on East Street, Georgetown, which Benschop has said, is funded mainly by well-wishers locally and overseas.

Mission Statement

The Mark Benschop Foundation was officially launched in March 2008 by its founder and chairman Mark Benschop and other concerned Guyanese and well wishers in the United States of America. What started as a small operation geared toward helping those in need has grown so large that they were forced to move their offices to a whole building in East Street where the vast amount of people responding to their generosity  could be accommodated.
