(KN) Akawaio Amerindians from the village of the Isseneru in Region Seven are claiming that their rights have been violated and the governance of their village undermined by a defiant miner who is boldly flouting orders by the authorities to cease mining. The village council did not give the permission for the miner in question to extract gold from an area within their titled and demarcated land. In fact, the head of the village, Dhanessl Larson, has declared that other villagers are being prevented by the miner, who has employed over a dozen workers, from even having access to the land where the mining is taking place. Larson and other members of his village council travelled to Georgetown yesterday to vent their frustration, saying that despite their repeated efforts, the miner has refused to comply with their request or that of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) to shut down his operation.

(KN) The ruling party yesterday insisted that while it remained committed to consulting with the Opposition on the preparation of the National Budget, it would be unwilling to surrender control. This much was made clear by President Donald Ramotar yesterday during his first press conference since being sworn in last month. During the opening session of the 10th Parliament on Thursday, Presidential Candidate of the A Partnership For National Unity (APNU), Brigadier General (rtd), David Granger, said that his party is not satisfied with “mere consultations” on the National Budget. “We are interested in collaboration. We want a budget that was drafted on a tripartite basis so that all of the monies that are collected through revenues are deployed to the benefit of the people as a whole.”

(KN) Fourteen years after he was suspended pending investigations into the alleged rape of two patients, physician Dr. Rama Sahadeo is asking to be allowed to work in Guyana again. But the sister of one of the alleged victims has vowed to do all in her power to stop Sahadeo from being allowed to practise here. Kaieteur News has confirmed that Sahadeo, now 68, has applied to the Medical Council of Guyana to have his suspension lifted. He is reportedly being represented by a senior counsel, who sent the application to the Council last December. This newspaper understands that members of the Council met on Thursday to discuss the issue. It is likely that the accused doctor will have to appear before the Council to have his cases heard. But according to medical sources, the testimonies the alleged victims gave to the Medical Council in 1997 were among documents that were destroyed in the Ministry of Health fire that occurred in July 2009.

(KN) Officials from a city hospital are refuting claims by a woman that negligence by their staff caused her baby’s death. But Angela Klass claims that her baby died on January 9 at the Georgetown Medical Centre Inc (formerly Prasad’s Hospital) because staffers left her unattended for several minutes even though she was ready to deliver. Despite being told by the physician that her baby, Angel Klass, was stillborn, Latashua Klass is convinced that her baby died because of the hospital’s negligence. Ms. Klass said that on January 9, after consulting a doctor hours in advance of labour pains, she arrived at the hospital around 17:15 hrs ready for delivery.
