PPP/C trying to cause unrest?
Monday, 21 November 2011

Dear Editor,
(KN) From all indications, it looks as if the PPP/C is trying all tricks in the pack to have unrest in this country. Last night, what happened at the Big Market was one of the ways they are trying to portray that the other parties are bad and they are good. The signs are there for all to see that they have nothing they could boast about without conflicts, so they choose to attack all who don’t support them or are a threat to them or put themselves in the way to aggravate people; but Guyanese have been showing them that they are not as the PPPC are trying to portray them. Since the elections campaign started, I believe that the same spot was where APNU keep their meeting every Friday Night, why take them off to keep a rally there? I cannot recall the PPPC keeping a rally there for the past nineteen (19) years.

(KN) The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has taken a decision to replace controversial Returning Officer for Region Four, Jaigobin Mohabir; but Mohabir yesterday said that he knew nothing of the decision. Mohabir’s appointment was a major concern for opposition political parties over claims that Mohabir, as Deputy Returning Officer, had signed Statements of Poll in the 1997 elections when he should not have done so. The Joint Opposition Political Parties (JOPP) had written GECOM Chairman Dr Steve Surujbally pointing out that Mohabir was cited in the written judgement of Justice Claudette Singh, in the Esther Pereira Elections Petition case of 1998. “The Chief Elections Officer then went on to say that the law does not make provision for the rewriting exercise neither does it make any provision for a parallel system. He was aware that one Deputy Returning Officer, Jaigobin Mohabir, signed for a Returning Officer.”

(KN) After vehemently denying claims that it approves contracts, the government was yesterday forced to admit that it approved the airport expansion project for which it secretly signed a deal with a Chinese company. It was only after this newspaper and the privately-owned Stabroek News ran a Jamaica Observer story about the project online that the government moved to say that it had approved the project. The government here had chided the company for releasing details of the project and blocked it from speaking to the media. Kaieteur News reported, yesterday, that the deal was signed last Friday and that the China Exim Bank is putting US$138 million ($27.6 billion) in financing. CHEC announced on its website that it had signed a contractual agreement with the Guyana Government to be the official contractors on the Cheddi Jagan International Airport expansion. The company said that the project will be funded by the China Exim Bank to the tune of US$138 million. “The Government of Guyana has announced that it is embarking on a major project to expand the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

Wrongfully detained Peter William

(KN) After being detained by the police for more than 42 hours, wrongfully accused by the cops as a man wanted to present evidence in a case, Peter William, said that all he received was an apology from the judiciary, while noting the damage already done to his reputation. The resident of 382 Burnham Boulevard, Mocha, who said that he is a well known joiner and upholsterer in his community, claims his wrongful detention has tarnished his well respected character and compromised works that the man is presently engaged in. The tradesman told this paper that he had been employed by E&D establishment owned by Aston King where he is currently furnishing items for the company. “How people gon look at me now? Who will help me make up for time lost when I still have people work to complete for the Christmas?” William continued. The disgruntled man claimed that while his name is Peter William the cops are trying to locate one Peter Williams who they say presented himself as a witness during the signing of statements that involved an accused rape and murder duo.
