By Freddie Kissoon The last thing any human being on Planet Earth who knows about Guyana’s history wants to see is election rigging and election conspiracies in this land. Such negative things hurt this country in bestial ways for over two decades. In 1992 we cleansed our collective souls of this madness. It is about to happen again. We knew it was coming. It was there for all to see but we wanted to see the denouement. Well it is here. The general election of 2011 is in trouble. It is doubtful it will occur. The PPP and the present ruling cabal do not want the elections. The moment of opposition mettle has arrived. The combined parliamentary opposition has lived in fear of this arrival. They cannot avoid it any longer. One reason for undermining GECOM has to do with the excruciating uncertainty about the outcome of the elections. The PPP is confused about the results of the poll. The hope inside Freedom House is that the PPP will lose the Parliament but win the presidency nevertheless.

Justice William Ramlal today quashed the indictment against a man who had been accused of murdering a woman in December 2005. Prosecutor Rhandel Weever, speaking with this newspaper briefly this afternoon, said that during court proceedings this morning the judge ruled that the indictment against Elroy Torres was a nullity. The court found that during the preliminary inquiry (PI) the magistrate did not properly rule on the admissibility of a caution statement. Torres was freed but re-arrested by the police. He is to be taken before the magistrate’s court where he will be remanded to prison and committed to face a PI again. Last week a mixed jury had been empanelled for the murder trial of Torres who allegedly killed Elizabeth Hutson, called Shelly, outside a city bar on December 19 2005. He reportedly stabbed the woman to death.

Police ranks are once again expressing frustration and disgust over the treatment meted out to them at the Georgetown Public Hospital. his feeling was amplified yesterday when a uniformed constable from the Mahaica Police Station turned up at the institution and had to endure a two-hour wait despite being in intense pain. There were some verbal exchanges between ranks who had accompanied their colleague and nurses at the institution with the latter ordering the former to leave the Accident and Emergency Unit.

Dear Editor, Ever since the 1997 elections that ended with the president-to-be Janet Jagan throwing a legal court document over her shoulder, and the haste with which the then GECOM Chairman and soon-to-be Attorney General Mr. Doodnauth Singh, rushed to have that inauguration ceremony, it began to highlight the fact that GECOM was being compromised. We are now 13 years past that very controversial election and we see the Government issuing a directive to GECOM on where they should place certain advertisements. GECOM I thought was a body that operated independent of the Government. So you must understand my surprise and utter dismay, when I read that an internal matter like the placement of advertisements was being dictated to GECOM by the Government.
