Fire of unknown origin yesterday afternoon gutted two houses at Golden Grove on the East Coast Demerara (ECD) leaving 16 persons homeless. Reports are that some time after 2 pm yesterday, smoke was seen emanating from the top flat of one of two houses at Lot 112 Jeune Street,Golden Grove and within the matter of minutes the house, along with another nearby, was reduced to ashes. The two houses belonged to the Carol Jones and her three siblings, Aubrey Josiah, Roshell Josiah and Shan Josiah who had been living at the location since they were children. Jones, a mother of two children, aged 13 and 9, told Stabroek News that she was at her workplace in the city when a neighbour asked her whether she knew that her home was on fire. She said she then hurriedly left the city for the ECD.

By Freddie Kissoon You just laugh at the fools that administer this country. They rant and rave about the commentaries published on their incompetence as if what is written and said about their ignorance, asininity and incompetence is untrue. Then you prove them right and they look like clowns in the eyes of the nation. medical technician at the Georgetown Public Hospital told me an interesting story. He said that he sat next to a group of East Indian businessmen who were bad-mouthing the Government, including those at the top of the pyramid. The event was a cricket match at the Providence Stadium. Then one of the big kings passed by and a photo opportunity was made use of.

… AG Report 2009 highlights longstanding discrepancies
The Auditor General’s (AG) Report of 2008 highlighted the inability of the Ministry of Finance to handle its own finances. The 2009 report is no different. It points out that for yet another year the Ministry of Finance continues to flout sound operational procedures for accounting agencies. By way of explanation the Ministry says, “… This matter continues to engage the attention of the Ministry as a matter of policy.” The 2009 report highlights several issues that have appeared in the AG’s reports for a number of years and have been receiving the same answer from the Ministry. Take for instance, Item No. 73 in the 2009 report where it states that during the review period, $414.310M was expended to meet operational costs for the State Planning Secretariat, Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), the National Procurement and Tender Board Administration (NPTAB), the Statistical Bureau and the Financial Intelligence Unit.

The United States is continuing to deny a visa to RUSAL boss Oleg Deripaska despite repeated request by Russia for an explanation and the enlisting of a US firm to help with the application. RUSAL has been running the Berbice bauxite administration and is embroiled in an almost year-old industrial dispute which the Guyana Government has been accused of turning a blind eye to. Reuters today reported that Washington has given no explanation for denying an entry visa to Russia’s fifth richest man and aluminium tycoon despite repeatedly being pressed to do so.

Leader of the Alliance For Change, Raphael Trotman, has written to the Speaker of the National Assembly to seek to have his Freedom of Information Bill debated before the end of this month, but support from the government benches is not likely to be forthcoming. A senior Government official on Sunday confirmed that the Bill put forward by Trotman was reviewed but that the government considered it to be, “very weak and a cut and paste job.” he official said that the President does look at Freedom of Information legislation as a priority but he wants one that is relevant and appropriate for Guyana. “Expect an enlightened Bill from the Government.” In Trotman’s notification to the Speaker of the National Assembly that he would like to have the Bill debated he said, “While I am disappointed that the Bill has not been passed into law, I am encouraged by the frequent references to the necessity of Freedom of Information legislation being made in many quarters, more particularly, by leading government functionaries.”
