Guyana Trades Union Congress Press Statement December 6, 2011 Ramotar called on to denounce police barbarity and address the people’s grievances December 6, 2011 is another dark day in the history of this country and coming less than a week after Mr. Donald Ramotar promised this nation “peace and unity.” Peace and unity are premised on justice and injustice anywhere poses a threat to peace and unity every where. The police shooting of persons engaged in peaceful social action is not where the people of this country desire to go or should be going. This action is a reminiscent of the May 1999 shooting of unarmed striking public servants in front of John Fernandes wharf.

Statement by: Mark Benschop and Freddie Kissoon Dear all, fair minded Guyanese. We couldn't sleep properly, knowing that our brothers and sisters are in pain after being brutalized by a few criminals within the Guyana Police Force. Our prayers are with them...having said that, we now wish to register publicly our first post elections disappointment of the AFC (the party we've endorsed) for remaining silent on the unjustified shooting of peaceful protestors, by the police. Whatever is the AFC's position on the APNU's protest march against the elections' results is quite irrelevant at this point. It's over 24 hours since the incident, and no press statement nor press conference on the issue at hand. A comment by its leader, is simply not enough.

If Guyana's new "First Lady" is serious about addressing women's issues, then, she ought to convince her husband to immediately release this woman (Ms. Monroe, her husband and an ex-army officer) from prison. They are currently in prison on a TRUMPED up Treason charge. Ms. Monroe has three little children who are in the care of her In-laws. What do you folks think? (check the chains on her feet)
