Warrant issued for Benschop over traffic matter
Tuesday, 16 November 2010

(Editor's note) Due to the vindictiveness of the police commissioner and other operatives within the police force, a fabricated traffic charge was levied against Mr. Benschop.  He arrived in Guyana from an overseas trip and has visited the court to answer to this frivolous charge.

There is a street named UG Access Road. At the junction of the Railway Embankment and UG Access Road, going west, on the southern side of the embankment road, a new housing scheme was started in 1995 by Guysuco for its senior employees. As years went by, Guysuco personnel sold their plots. I bought one of those units and built a home there. The only structure I own. From UG Access Road to the Caricom Secretariat, there are thirteen front homes in that suburb, meaning that those houses face the Railway Embankment, further meaning that the draining trench lies in front of these structures. fter the 13th unit, there is no trench. It was filled up and replaced by an underground tunnel. In that area lie the Caricom Secretariat and the Convention Centre.

Nurse stabbed, doused with acid at GPHC
Monday, 15 November 2010

A nurse/midwife was stabbed to her face and had acid thrown on her in a brutal attack at her workplace at the Georgetown Public Hospital last evening. Ursula Houston of Laing Avenue was admitted to the Burn Care Unit of the  hospital following the attack. Her attacker, a former lover, fled and was being sought by police. He stabbed Houston over her left eye with a broken bottle and threw acid on her, hospital sources told Stabroek News. She suffered burns to her face, left hand and other parts of her exposed upper body, this newspaper was told. The attack occurred at around 7:30 pm at the Maternity Unit where Houston worked. She was stepping out of the nurses’ room at Ward 5 when the man pounced. The attacker goes by the nickname ‘Thousand’, law enforcement officials said. According to reports, Houston broke off a relationship with the man and apparently he could not deal with it. When this newspaper visited the Laing Avenue home of Houston, a relative, Abbiola said that she had just received the news and did not know much. However, she said that Houston had worked at the hospital for a number of years and was in her 40’s. She confirmed that Houston knew ‘Thousand’. Houston has one child who is overseas.

Girl, 13 missing since October
Monday, 15 November 2010

Alwin Garcia, of 7 Hague Public Road, West Coast Demerara, is appealing to the public to help find his 13-year-old daughter, Alana Garcia. The teen, who is a student of the Leonora Secondary School, has been missing since October 19. She was last seen by her father when she had returned from school. She had informed him that she would be going out to take “a walk,” but she never returned. Mr. Garcia is contending that he did not take the situation “serious”, because this has not been the first time that his daughter ran away from home. He said that when the first incident occurred, reports were made to the police and Human Services Ministry. He added that representatives from the Ministry visited their home twice to counsel his daughter, but since then, they have not returned. However, reports of this most recent disappearance were made to the Den Amstel Police Station, but the family has not got word from the authorities since. Alana is four feet eleven inches tall and was last seen wearing a blue top, a pair of blue jeans and a pair of slippers. Anyone with any information that would lead to Alana Garcia’s safe return home is asked to contact the family at 692-9081/ 276-3062 (father) or 644-7176 (mother).

Shadow Home Affairs Minister of the People’s National Congress Reform, Deborah Backer, has stated that based statistics from the Guyana Police Force the crime rate in Guyana is at its all time highest. The statement was made on Friday during the party’s weekly media briefing. Backer stated that throughout the 11-year tenure of President Bharrat Jagdeo, from 1999 to 2010, the average rate of murders has been the highest in the country’s history. The rate for 2010, so far, indicates a continuation of that bloody record. According to the Head of the Criminal Investigation Department, of the Guyana Police Force, Assistant Commissioner, Mr. Seelall Persaud, as at October 31, (the 304th day of the year), the Force has recorded 116 murders. Mission Statement

The Mark Benschop Foundation was officially launched in March 2008 by its founder and chairman Mark Benschop and other concerned Guyanese and well wishers in the United States of America. What started as a small operation geared toward helping those in need has grown so large that they were forced to move their offices to a whole building in East Street where the vast amount of people responding to their generosity  could be accommodated.
