By Peeping Tom If a party takes a position on a matter and then one of its members adopts a posture that is in contravention of that position, then the member can rightly be said to be in a conflict of interest even though the party may respect the duality of professional and political obligations. The Chairman of the Alliance for Change, Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan, has indicated that there is no conflict of interest involved in a leading member of his executive undertaking public relations work with the company that is behind the construction of a controversial roadway to Amalia Falls. If the Alliance for Change is now indicating that its member is not in a conflict of interest, then it means that the Alliance for Change has not taken an adverse position on the road project. For surely had the AFC taken a negative position on the construction of the roadway, then it would have placed that member in a situation whereby the party opposes the deal to build the road and yet one of its members is undertaking PR work for the contractor involved. Would that not be a conflict of interest?

The proprietor of the business establishment, Alec Shurland, said that at approximately 10:30 pm Sunday night he was closing his shop when five men in a white wagon, PKK 9689 turned up requesting a bottle of 5-year-old rum. He said that one of the occupants of the vehicle was wearing a red shirt. Former PNC Finance Minister Carl Greenidge has been nominated by the Murray camp as their choice for the party’s presidential candidacy, Stabroek News has confirmed. According to Ronald Austin, a former ambassador and Murray supporter, Greenidge has reacted positively. “He is interested,” Austin stated briefly, adding that Greenidge will need to work out how the move is going to affect his professional life. The Murray camp is expected to issue a statement shortly on the issue. Greenidge is the Deputy Senior Director, in the CARICOM Secretariat’s Office of Trade Negotiations (OTN) and is a member of the OTN’s management team. He served as an interim Secretary General of the ACP Group in Brussels and Director of the joint ACP-EU specialist institution on information communication technology, the CTA in Wageningen, The Netherlands. As Minister of Finance he headed the Guyana teams which negotiated agreements such as Paris Club and the first ever programme for the clearance of arrears to the Multilateral Institutions under the so-called ‘Intensified Collaborative Approach’ for chronically indebted countries and buy-back of commercial debt, on which successful management of Guyana’s Economic Recovery Programme and HIPC eligibility were based.

By Freddie Kissoon As my daughter came of age, I sat her down and told her that my public profile would bring her into contact with unending sentiments about her father – some good, some bad, some very loving, others terribly harsh. When it came to the negatives, my warning came straight out of life’s text book – you just cannot be occupied and never be preoccupied with the nasty things people say about you. I explained to her, this was the fastest and surest way to depression. I have constantly told my daughter she must understand that of the six billion people in the word, there are six billion expressions of human nature.

By: Peeping Tom The concessions that were recently offered to Chinese immigrants do not fundamentally address the main concerns of this group. While many will no doubt welcome the seven year citizenship rule, and others will find relief that work permits can now be issued for three years, these announcements do remove the administrative bottlenecks confronting immigrants. It is one thing for the President of Guyana to indicate that he is addressing concerns about corruption in immigration circles by allowing those Chinese who have been resident for seven years here to qualify for citizenship. It is one thing also for the government as a matter of policy to approve work permits for three years.
